I used to see MYS a lot in the past (I came across Etc. less often). I also used it at one point, then merged Me/Site and later changed it to Code, Site and just dropped the Me and You. My navis have changed over the years and I’ve also had some less prominent navis in page links. I think a lot of personal sites have evolved into blogs that use a certain platform like Tumblr, WordPress, etc. and everything appears on the entries, sometimes filtered by keywords, rather than on site sections that are more “static” by comparison, as entries tend to be more quickly replaced by newer entries.

I didn’t used to see a lot of personal sites by guys in general. I’ve seen some by now, but still not as many as personal or fansites by girls. I remember in the past some used to say there were no girls on the internet, but I felt like it was the opposite. Which was likely due to the type of sites I had/visited (fanfiction, fanart, etc.) had mostly female designers. I do believe the number of male fanfiction writers has risen over the years. Though most reader insert writers are still female, there are more male general fanfiction writers. Just some random things I noticed.

I never joined any elite cliques. ^^;; My sites never used to be pretty enough. In terms of free hosts, I used Angelfire, Geocities and Lycos, then moved to FateBack when it was ad free, to SailorMoon when FateBack got ads and SM used to have free hosting. Then when SM closed its free hosting Cherri hosted me. I was also hosted by Angie for a while after Geocities closed before I found FateBack. I can still view my first website from Angelfire on the WayBack Machine and I have to say that thing is ugly in every sense. I loved it dearly and learned a lot from it though… but wow, it’s kind of embarrassing. XD

A lot of people are moving towards social media. I think the worse part of that is the increase of reposting stolen fanart and just reposting everything without asking. I’m fine with sharing links because then you’re pointing someone towards the page where the artist/writer is displaying the work, but it’s awful when they repost the fanart image itself without asking.

I think in one of my old blogs before, I did use “Me” and “Site” as one of the nav items before. I didn’t know what to offer (freebies) before so I just skipped the “You” part and went to “Contact” and “Exits” directly. Maybe one day I’ll offer freebies here, like fonts or maybe background patterns or pixel art adoptables or something. We’ll see. 🙂

I’ve seen a few personal sites by guys before, though most of them also act as a portfolio too (like with art or their web app projects, etc.). One of my favorite personal sites I often visit is http://ipeedalittle.com and the owner’s personal portfolio too (http://justinhanks.com/). Also, if you remember/heard of The QBee (The Quilting Bee) from before, one of the past owners was also a guy (I think we call them Queen Bees or something like that?). I joined QBee a few years ago and that’s where I actually learned how to do pixel art. I’ll try to do pixel art again when I have the chance. 🙂

I think the difference between male web developers and female web developers is the aesthetics portion (designing). Most guys just want things to work. We females want things to work AND look good. (not being sexist or anything) Nowadays, it all just depends on the person. 🙂

As for “elite” cliques, a lot of the sites they accepted before were kinda “generic.” What I mean by this is that a lot of their graphics were “blended” with either celebrity photos or just some random models from ads they see from those high-end fashion magazines. I like blended images that look like mosaics, but back then, not everyone is aware of the copyright issues they may be violating (just like how some people use fanart for their layouts for their personal sites, etc.). Of course, that was before royalty-free image sites like stock.xchange and Pixabay started to emerge.

I’m somewhat active in social media, but in the beginning, it’s because my family overseas have them, so it’s a way to keep in touch with them, and of course, keep in touch w/ old friends too (Facebook mostly). But it helps spread around your work around. ^^

I made 2 pixel art during my time at The QBee. I should post them up somewhere here too. Thanks for reminding them about them LOL. Let me look for them, they’re somewhere in my HD ^^
