Just in case some of you are unfamiliar with this web animated series, meet Ruby Rose, the main character of the popular 3D anime-inspired web animated series, RWBY. In case you’re wondering what this entry is about, no, it’s not about the series nor it’s about Ruby Rose. I’m only using her picture simply because of her first name, and of course, the title of the series: Ruby. 1
I have been planning for my next move at Skillcrush after I graduated and earned my WordPress Developer Blueprint certificate last year. The reason why I waited for over a year was so I could earn enough money to pay for the next blueprint challenge that I would like to add to my arsenal: Ruby on Rails. Now you know the reason why I am using Ruby Rose’s image for this entry.
I tried the Ruby (on Rails) courses on Udemy 2, Code School 3, even Sitepoint. 4 I’ve always reminded myself to commit in finishing those courses, and yet something else takes my attention away from them. For instance, personal/fan projects, doing some art to release my stress, and everything else creative, but not web development/programming-related. It’s a horrible habit, and even though I’ve promised myself to really work on improving my portfolio, create something worthy to be uploaded on my GitHub, and redo my resume and prepare myself for entering the high-demanding job market. 5
Class starts on Monday (7/11), but I just went through the orientation session earlier and downloaded a couple of documents to read before the first week begins. This is a 3-month blueprint course, therefore I won’t be finishing this class until near October. Yes, it will be that long, and there is a good reason why it would be that long. What does this mean for my other projects?
- CBLW will be slowly worked on. I don’t know what the official launch time is just yet. Let’s all just learn how to be patient.
- I will be writing about my Ruby on Rails blueprint class here as my way of reflecting I’ve just learned from that day. 6
- Write and showcase the projects I’ll be building using Ruby on Rails.
- Some other stuff related and unrelated.
This is a short entry, and that it’s past midnight here, so I’ll end the entry here. See you again next time!
On the sidenote…
- “RWBY” is pronounced “ruby.” ↩
- luckily some of them are free, some of them were on sale for only $10… ↩
- because I’m trying to take the other classes prior to Ruby on Rails, just so I can earn some badges ↩
- I have a lifetime subscription that I purchased on sale at DealFuel, which is really awesome! Their classes are a little scattered, but I am doing as much as I can to read their Ruby on Rails eBook though. I’ve always been a fan of Sitepoint books for over a decade now. ↩
- Automattic is my goal, even if it’s just customer support. I’m good with it. ↩
- who knows, maybe you can learn something from what Ruby and Ruby on Rails may look like in the real world. ↩

Hi Adrianne! Recently I have been doing the same thing as you and using my website as a learning journal and I feel it’s important to share the knowledge because that’s how I learnt. It’s great to see another similar site, I’m a bit of a code junkie so it’d be awesome to chat with others about it. I would love to exchange links, I’ll add you now 🙂
I’ve never used Ruby on Rails, how are you finding it? We use .NET/C# at my workplace (a couple of WordPress sites too). I highly recommend Code Academy: https://www.codecademy.com/ This month I have been learning a lot of SASS and now implementing BEM CSS methodology in projects.

Hi Sasha, thanks for stopping by! I went ahead and added you to my Exits section (under “Tuts”). 🙂
I actually started getting my hands dirty with Ruby (not Ruby on Rails, just Ruby LOL) on CodeAcademy first, but back then, it was still brand-new so I kinda lost touch with Ruby. Also, for some reason, I’m having trouble retaining what I’ve learned from CodeAcademy, Udemy, SitePoint, and Code School (I postponed my Treehouse subscription for the time being) and I thought that maybe I needed something a lot more “real world hands on” with some live help and decided to go back to Skillcrush.
I went for the Ruby on Rails route because it seemed easier to learn than PHP or Javascript LOL (even until now I’m still having trouble with Javascript, but I got the idea on jQuery. I wonder how that worked LOL). I’m currently going through Free Code Camp (http://freecodecamp.com) also to learn Javascript, but haven’t had the time to get back to it as of late. The Skillcrush Ruby on Rails class doesn’t start till Monday (7/11), but looking forward to it! I also dabbled with Sass a little bit. I’ve heard of BEM CSS before but haven’t gotten around to reading it. Thanks for reminding me LOL!

I’m exactly the same. I’m hopeless at web courses, it just goes in one ear and out the other. I find practising with projects and actually making something is the best way I learn.

Another thing that also makes me lose interest/motivation to continue learning is if something basic (ie. installation, etc.) isn’t working very well with your computer. You get so frustrated, you just want to beat up your computer for not working well LOL. But I agree, being hands-on is the best way for me to learn. I’m glad that some of these classes do allow you to create your own projects and apply them. 🙂

I remember seeing an episode of RWBY but never really got into it. I know what it’s like getting distracted, though for me it’s wanting to spend more time on art and hopefully be good at it one day. Good luck with all your classes!

I saw one episode of RWBY a few years ago and I dunno, lost touch LOL. But I did remember Ruby Rose and instead of using a stock photo of ruby gems, I decided to use her to write about Ruby on Rails LOL. I too want to spend more time on art and be good at it too, though primarily with lettering (zen art is just for stress relief LOL) and maybe some illustrations too. ^^
